Playful Engagement Photos at Sunset Beach

There is something about a cold, overcast morning on the Oregon Coast that just works.

I met Amelia and Paul at Sunset Beach near Seaside, Oregon for an early morning engagement session. It was cold when we started, so naturally the solution was to immediately start running around.

And honestly? It worked.

We spent the first part of their session frolicking through the tall grass, running around, laughing, and generally causing a little chaos. By the end of the morning, all three of us had shed most of the layers we'd shown up in.

Amelia and Paul were an absolute dream to photograph. They were goofy, affectionate, completely down to try new things, and so clearly in love.

Candid Engagement Photos on the Oregon Coast

My favorite sessions usually happen when we're doing something rather than worrying too much about posing.

Amelia and Paul made that incredibly easy.

We ran through the grass, wandered along the beach and let them interact with each other as naturally as possible. Every so often Paul would spontaneously run up and scoop Amelia off the ground, which was a hoot and quickly became one of my favorite things to photograph.

She loved it. He loved making her laugh. And I got to basically follow them around documenting it.

After we'd sufficiently frolicked, we slowed everything down and tucked into the tall grass for some moodier portraits together.

The combination ended up being exactly what I love about engagement photos: warm, cinematic, playful and actually reflective of the couple in them.

Why I Love Sunset Beach for Engagement Photos

Sunset Beach is one of my favorite spots near Seaside for Oregon Coast engagement photos, especially if you want something a little quieter.

You can actually drive right onto the sand, which makes getting there incredibly easy, and the beach itself is huge. There is so much room to wander that it's pretty easy to find a little pocket of privacy without a bunch of people standing around watching you take photos.

No looky-loos is always a win in my book.

Cannon Beach tends to get most of the attention when people think about picturesque locations on the Northern Oregon Coast, but I think Sunset Beach has its own kind of simple elegance. You have the tall coastal grass, massive stretches of sand and a much quieter landscape that lets the two of you become the focus.

And on an overcast morning like this one? It's gorgeous.

The wind started picking up just as we were finishing our session, so our timing couldn't have been better.

I left this shoot genuinely excited about what we'd created together. Amelia and Paul were ridiculously fun to spend the morning with, and apparently we all agreed because we're already planning another shoot together.

I cannot wait to get these two back in front of my camera.

Planning Your Own Oregon Coast Engagement Photos?

Your engagement photos don't have to mean standing perfectly still on a beach wondering what you're supposed to do with your hands.

We can run around. Wander through the grass. Explore the coast. Be a little ridiculous. Make each other laugh. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, I'll photograph the two of you being yourselves.

If you're looking for a Seaside Oregon engagement photographer or dreaming up an engagement session somewhere along the Oregon Coast, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
